Announcement to stop posting news and photos on FB page Support Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith (26/6/2019)

On 26th June 2019, the news agency “KPL” posted on their Facebook page that the Public Relations Department from Prime Minister’s office informed that the Facebook page entitled “Support Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith” is not linked to Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith himself.

Official from Public Relations Department added “previously, news and photos posted on this page were false information”. So it urged the admin of this page  stop to post any news and photos on its page and must follow Media Law (revised), Anti Cyber Crime Law, Prime Minister Decree No. 327/PM on online information management  and another relevant regulation.

However, there were mixed comments when this announcement released, which most of citizen of Laos said the page was created since 2016 and it has been active for few years already, why the announcement has just been made.

Many citizens said when this page was created, many issues especially related to corruption, illegal logging, and land disputes were raised on this page which they feel that this page allowed public to share their opinion and call the action from relevant stakeholders such as companies and government sectors to do their job.

Since the announcement (which just posted on KPL Facebook page, there was no official document released yet), the Support Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith page seems quite and no any posts yet since 26th June 2019.

It is interesting what will happen next because this is much relevant to the freedom of expression and access to information.
