Millers ask authorities to increase supply of rice to markets

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) – Rice mill owners in Laos have sought the State sector’s intervention to stabilise the retail price of rice in markets, but the authorities are continuing to wait so they can monitor the situation for a little longer.

Rice mills are facing problems in finding and buying rice during the rainy season because of a shortfall in supply. This means consumers have to spend more on this staple food item.

Director of the Champahom Rice Milling Factory in Vientiane, Mrs Bounhieng Phommixay, told Vientiane Times on Wednesday that the price of one kilogram of paddy sticky rice had increased from 2,800-3,000 kip per kg to 4,500-4,700 kip per kg depending on quality over the past two months.

The price of milled sticky rice also rose, from 6,000 kip per kg to 7,500-8,000 kip per kg.
